Learning Is Forever (but Learning Management Systems are still in their infancy)

It’s easy to believe that organizational learning programs have been around forever.

But many people are still wondering, “What is a Learning Management System (LMS)?”

Legal teams need to ensure employees complete mandatory training programs to improve compliance with organizational and legal requirements while mitigating liability.

Executive leaders want a way to compare investment in training programs and business impacts to job performance, productivity and efficiency.

Human Resources leaders need to manage creation, assignment and completion of all key programs that align with both legal and executive needs.

But what about employees?

With all of the focus on mandatory training (much of which is mind-numbingly boring), it’s easy to think that most employees would rather check the compliance boxes as quickly as possible to just get back to work.

And yet, employees not only want more training, they are often willing to pay for it out of their own pockets to become “Future Ready.”

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Udemy has seen a 425% increase in consumer enrollments and an 80% increase in usage from businesses and government organizations. This is a clear sign that people want to learn and will pay for the opportunity. And organizations who prioritize learning are more likely to engage the talent they need to succeed today.

And then there’s tomorrow.

One of the most significant lessons of the pandemic is the critical need to invest in future readiness and resilience.

In a recent article for Forbes, Darren Shimkus writes, “With workers in a state of constant transition and challenge— from potential reorganizations to working from home as a parent — the need for self-directed, on-demand, and truly continuous learning has never been more acute.”

As mentioned in a previous article, people of every age group believe training and opportunities to grow are extremely important in a job and 57 percent of senior leaders now believe soft skills are even more important than traditional “hard skills.”

Jim Hemgen, a Senior Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton, says, “We have always been an organization of continuous learners, but we’re seeing renewed interest as employees adjust to new ways of working: consuming content around problem solving, productivity, and working and managing virtually. Employees who may have been reticent to learn online are engaging in learning new skills that will help them do their jobs better or support transitions to new roles amidst the shifting landscape.”

Learning isn’t an option when disruption can come from anywhere at any time with consequences that are impossible to predict.

And where the only constant is increasingly rapid change, resilience and the ability to rapidly change are essential skills.
